As August 2025 begins, we’re excited to uphold our commitment to environmental projects around the world, in partnership with our eco-project collaborator, Ecologi. This month, we’re highlighting two extraordinary initiatives: the preservation of the Matavén forest in eastern Colombia and the restoration of native Polylepis forests in the high Andes.
Project 1: Safeguarding the Matavén Forest
Nestled within the Indigenous Reservation of Colombia, the Matavén forest is a vast expanse of 1.15 million hectares of tropical forest. The Matavén REDD+ project is dedicated to preserving this biodiversity hotspot, addressing the pressing concerns of deforestation and biodiversity loss. By championing this project, we’re aligning ourselves with the local Indigenous communities and playing a part in the protection of this vital ecosystem.
The Matavén forest is more than just a home for diverse species of plants and animals; it plays a critical role in climate change mitigation. Its lush tropical forest serves as a substantial carbon sink, soaking up CO2 emissions and thus lowering the overall carbon footprint. We’re honoured to be involved in this essential conservation effort.
Project 2: Rebuilding Native Polylepis Forests
High in the Andes, a determined project is in progress to rejuvenate the native Polylepis forests. Polylepis trees, abundant in the area, make up the majority of the restoration work, accounting for between 65 and 90% of the trees planted. The rest are other native species, varying based on the region.
These restoration activities are vital for preserving the biodiversity of the high Andes and protecting the natural habitats of many endemic species. It’s a mission riddled with obstacles due to the harsh mountainous terrain – but it’s an endeavour that’s undoubtedly worth the effort.
Over the last four years, we’re proud to have funded the planting of 4612 trees since the inception of our alliance with Ecologi. Our dedication to these environmental projects is a fundamental part of our mission, and we’re eager to keep backing such valuable work.
