Eco Update: July 2025

Published 1 August 2025 at 14:01

July 2025 sees us at Enbecom steadfastly supporting environmental initiatives worldwide, in collaboration with our eco-project ally, Ecologi. This month, we want to shine a spotlight on two remarkable projects: the creation of biochar from waste biomass in Wales, and the rejuvenation of native Polylepis forests in the high Andes.

Generating biochar from waste biomass in Wales

The natural decomposition of biomass releases carbon and methane into the atmosphere, accelerating climate change. A groundbreaking initiative in Wales, however, is flipping this process by converting waste biomass into biochar. Biochar is a highly stable substance that doesn’t decompose as regular biomass does. By transforming waste biomass into biochar, we can establish a more enduring way to extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This technique not only aids in lowering carbon emissions but also promotes a cleaner and healthier environment.

Revitalising native Polylepis forests in the high Andes

A considerable endeavour in the high Andes is focused on reviving the native Polylepis forests. These forests are teeming with a wide variety of flora and fauna, many of which are exclusive to this area. The project ensures that on average, 65 to 90% of the trees planted are the locally dominant Polylepis species, supplemented with other native species depending on the region. This strategy preserves the ecological integrity of the area while restoring the forests to their original splendour.

We’re honoured to have financed the planting of 4599 trees since the inception of our partnership with Ecologi over 4 years ago. This commitment embodies our devotion to forging a sustainable future, one tree at a time.
