Enbecom is delighted to reinforce its commitment to global climate action through its ongoing partnership with Ecologi. This February, our support was directed towards two pivotal initiatives: the reduction of methane emissions from landfills in Brazil and the protection of the Matavén Forest in eastern Colombia.
Avoiding methane emissions from landfill in Brazil
In Brazil, the Macaúbas Landfill Gas Project addresses the significant environmental challenge posed by the nation’s substantial waste production. With Brazil ranking as the fifth-largest waste producer globally, landfills are a major source of methane emissions, a greenhouse gas considerably more potent than carbon dioxide.
The project, located at the Central de Tratamento de Resíduos Macaúbas, employs advanced technology to capture, flare, and utilise landfill gas for electricity generation. This initiative has achieved a notable reduction of 102,580 tCO₂e in emissions, while also contributing to the national energy grid and providing local employment. This project exemplifies a successful integration of environmental mitigation with socio-economic development.
Protection of the Matavén forest in eastern Colombia
In Colombia, the Matavén REDD+ project focuses on safeguarding 1,150,212 hectares of biodiverse tropical forest within the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest. Colombia, a nation of exceptional biodiversity, has faced substantial deforestation in the Vichada department.
This project addresses this by providing sustainable alternatives for the nearly 16,000 Indigenous inhabitants, including employment as rangers and support for sustainable livelihoods. Furthermore, the project invests in essential community infrastructure, such as education, healthcare, and food security.
The project’s adherence to Verra’s Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS) certification attests to its commitment to delivering tangible benefits for both the environment and local communities.
