Since partnering with Ecologi, we have helped prevent the release of 48.91 tCO2e through 45 verified carbon avoidance projects. While reducing your own emissions has the greatest impact, carbon avoidance initiatives provide additional climate solutions by cutting greenhouse gas emissions, restoring ecosystems, and supporting local communities. These projects can also help offset unavoidable emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecologi only supports projects certified by either the Gold Standard or Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). Further certifications, such as the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS) and the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta), recognise the projects’ contributions to sustainable development and their benefits for local people and the environment. Ecologi also utilises third-party platforms like Sylvera to ensure all projects meet the highest standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the projects we supported in September has achieved emission reductions of 102,580 tCO\u2082e in its current phase. In 2015, Brazil generated around 79.9 million tonnes of municipal solid waste, averaging 1.071 kg per person per day. Most of this waste is sent to landfills, where it decomposes and releases methane, a gas that is 34 times more potent than carbon dioxide in contributing to global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Maca\u00fabas Landfill Gas Project in Brazil seeks to lower methane emissions from the “Central de Tratamento de Res\u00edduos Maca\u00fabas” landfill in Sabar\u00e1, Minas Gerais. The project involves the installation of active landfill gas (LFG) extraction, flaring, and electricity generation systems, replacing an older passive system. This setup prevents methane from escaping into the atmosphere and produces electricity. Additionally, it creates jobs by hiring skilled workers to operate the machinery, which helps boost the local economy while offering environmental and energy benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have also supported the Matav\u00e9n REDD+ project, which safeguards 1,150,212 hectares of tropical forest within the Indigenous Reservation of the Matav\u00e9n Forest in Colombia. Deforestation has long been a significant environmental issue in this region; from 1990 to 2005, around 500,000 hectares of forest were lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past decade, the Matav\u00e9n REDD+ project has successfully prevented emissions that would have otherwise been released. It provides local farmers with alternatives to deforestation by employing them as rangers and promoting sustainable livelihoods that protect the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 16,000 Indigenous people benefit from related initiatives that improve education, healthcare, dental services, sanitation, and food security. Alongside reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this project supports local communities and biodiversity conservation and is certified by Verra\u2019s Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
